Mumbai Strikers suffered a 2-1 defeat to Bombay Gymkhana in their last match of the campaign on a boiling hot afternoon at the Neville Dsouza Football Ground.
MS started off incredibly strong, managed to keep majority possession in the first half as Bombay Gymkhana sat back and played on some quick counters. BG got the breakthrough against the run of play late in the first half as MS were caught in possession right in front of goal, sparking a quick counter attack by BG. A quick one-two saw the BG striker on goal as his attempt hit the cross bar and fortunately fell again to him. He centred the ball on the second attempt to an unmarked forward in the six yard box, whose first time tap-in gave BG the lead. BG managed to hold on to the lead going into the break.
MS looked much better in the second half as some positional changes and substitutions had its effect. Shaun M came in for Akshay S who got injured in the first half. MS were attacking fluidly from the left flank as Abhijit and Dilip combined well. The equaliser came from the substitute Shaun M as Abhijit went pass a few defenders and played diagonal through pass to Shaun M who took a good first touch and placed it to the far post past the onrushing keeper. After the equaliser MS controlled the game and had majority of the possession but were unable to get going in the final third. BG looked tired but a bad pass by the MS Centre Back set another oppurtunity for BG to clinch the second goal. Some good luck favored the BG striker who wriggled his way past the last defender and had only the GK to beat. The BG attacker took his time to place the ball in the net as the MS custodian Abhishek Singh came out to close him down. MS failed to create clear oppurtunities then on as the sweltering heat took its toll and BG held on.
MS's defeat marks their sixth loss in the MFL Elite season & with five wins, three draws remain on 18 points in the standings. MS is gratefull for all the support its received this season & will be back refreshed and gearing to go next season.
