The Mumbai Strikers began the new season in the Super Division on a positive note by defeating Air India U-19 by a score of 1-0 in their first league match. The tie was held at the Goan Sports Association Ground, CST on the 25th of October. Attacking Spearhead and top scorer of the last season Ravish D’souza netted the lone and most important goal in the 19th minute to put the pressure on the Super Division Champions of last year.
The Strikers were under pressure as they faced the champs from last year and also it was their debut at the highest level in 17 years. However, the pressure was well handled as they kept Air India at bay by defending stubbornly as the opponents had piled on the pressure early on in the game. The 19th minute goal came as a respite and also proved to be the winning goal of the match. MS then had a few chances to increase their tally but some tough defending and a couple of super saves from the Air India goalkeeper kept them alive with hopes of a draw. The Strikers entered the second half with full focus as a slim lead of 1-0 was not enough against an experienced team. Both teams created some excellent chances but lacked finishing and at the end of regulation time the score read 1-0 in favour of Mumbai Strikers SC.
Coach Firmin D’souza praised the team for their win but also pointed out that there was room for more improvement as this is a new level and every opponent is tough. Coach Firmin and the team also dedicate this victory to Late Clifton Sequeira, brother of Mumbai Strikers SC defender Calvin Sequeira who passed away last week.
