The stage was set on a very wet day for teams participating in the fifth edition of the Independence Cup Touch Rugby Championship 2017. The tournament was being held under the aegis of the Rugby Union of Mumbai Suburbs for the second time.
Conditions were somewhat apt for an amazing day of rugby as it poured throughout the day on 20th August, 2017. The likes of Societe Generale, Ace Foundation, All Dreams & Slum Lions, hailing from various suburbs of Mumbai took part in the event. Boys and girls belonging to the Ball Project also participated as Durgawadi United for the second consecutive year.
Thrilling encounters ended in nail-biting finishes in all the categories of the tournament. In the Men’s category, Ace Foundation trumped the Slum Lions in the finale to bag top honours after an edge of the seat match. The Women’s & Mixed category ended up with the same contenders, but the results were different. In the women’s section, Sporting Mulund FC beat the Mumbai Strikers SC girls while Mumbai Strikers SC took away bragging rights against Sporting Mulund FC in the mixed category.
All in all a good day for the sport of Rugby.
